This stormwater drainage system was designed to be natural, native, and multi-functional, serving both the community and the environment.
A primary goal of the Abacoa Greenway design was to meet the stormwater management and irrigation storage needs of the 2,050-acre Development of Regional Impact community using low-impact design practices.
Today, the Abacoa Greenway functions through a connected network of upland preserves, retention areas, open space, and lakes that move stormwater throughout the community while providing efficient water storage for irrigation. Beyond its functional purpose, the Greenway also supports natural wildlife habitat and provides walking trails for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The Abacoa DRI is a 2,050-acre Traditional Neighborhood Development that includes residential neighborhoods, retail, office, research and development, industrial, medical office, a town center, the Florida Atlantic University campus, a spring training baseball facility for two professional teams, a public golf course, civic buildings, a public school site, a Tri-Rail station, and more than 528 acres of open space, upland preserve, and lakes.
The Abacoa Master Plan was prepared in 1994, approved in March 1995, broke ground in April 1996, and is now nearly fully built out. A detailed project description is coming soon. Get in touch to learn more about this project.
